Last week the Southwest Alabama Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) honored its volunteers at the annual awards and recognition dinner held at Pineview Baptist Church in Thomasville. Sponsored locally by the city of Thomasville, the Southwest Alabama chapter has 222 volunteers in six counties - Clarke, Choctaw, Dallas, Marengo, Washington and Wilcox. These volunteers reported 21,500 volunteer hours during the past year.

Fran Lankford of Washington County was named the Volunteer of the Year with all

of the other 15 nominees being recognized.

The President's Volunteer Service Award was presented to 36 of the volunteers in three categories - bronze, silver and gold.

Bronze recipients completed 100 - 249 hours of community service. Silver recipients com- pleted between 250 and 499 hours of community service and gold recipients completed more than 500 hours.

Berniece McIlwain of Choctaw County was the first recipient of a new award presented for the 2007 year - the Volunteer Hall of Fame award. It was set up to recognize an individual who demonstrated knowledge about RSVP and what the organization represents.
