Difficult to get any good info on Iran
OUR VIEW
Portions of the National Intelligence Estimate were released this week reporting that Iran likely halted its nuclear weapons program four years ago.

That's an about-face from the same report in 2005 that concluded Iran was committed to the production of nuclear weapons.

Which report is right? We may never know. Or we may not know until it's too late.

Perhaps one thing these two reports two years apart can tell us, is that we truly know very little about the inner workings in a place like Iran.

In a place with an autocratic government and a culture and values often radically different from our own, up is sometimes really down and yes sometimes means no.

It's likely an incredibly daunting task to actually infiltrate these kinds of places with spies, and the level of mistrust that can breed in these climates can make getting any kind of reliable information more or less a guessing game.

What we do know is that we don't really know much about what's going on in Iran and what the intentions of its governmental leaders really are.

We can also with some assurance figure that whatever the reality of the situation in Iran, politics at home will play just as much a role in how we deal with this country as anything else.
