TMS boys basketball team finishes season at 7-1 The Thomasville Middle School boys basketball team picked up two big wins in the final week of their season to end the year with a 7 - 1 record. One of those wins came on Tuesday, November 27 when the TMS boys traveled to Grove Hill and defeated the Wilson Hall Middle School boys 32 - 30 in a real barn burner. The win avenged the only loss the TMS boys had on the season, a 39 - 20 loss to the boys from Wilson Hall earlier in the year. "We fought back the whole game," TMS Coach Russell Wright said. "We showed a lot of character in the game and I couldn't be more proud of our effort. It was a big win for us." In the game, Wilson Hall jumped out to an 8 - 1 lead after the first quarter and held a 14 - 10 margin at the half. But TMS fought their way back into it and finally took their first lead with :44 remaining in the game. Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch and a steal with :18 made it possible for TMS to hold on at the end and post the victory. On offense Tyler Hayes led the way for TMS with 13 points followed by James Bettis with nine points and Monterrio Evans with six. Tevin Watters added three points to the cause and Alonzo Brown picked up one. On the boards Hayes was also the lead with 14 followed by Evans with seven and Bettis with five. Bettis and Watters were the assists leaders with three apiece. On defense, Hayes had eight blocked shots while Bettis picked up one. Leading the team in steals was John Knight with six followed by Bettis and Hayes with five apiece and Watters with four. The other game, which was the season finale for the TMS boys, took place in Thomasville on Thursday, November 29, against the Jackson Middle School boys. In this one, it was all TMS from the beginning to the end as they jumped out to a 18 - 5 lead in the first quarter, increased it to 31 - 11 by halftime and coasted to a 66 - 30 win. "I was proud of the effort of the entire team in our win over Jackson," Coach Russell Wright said. "Getting ahead early like we did allowed everyone to get a lot of playing time and every player on the team scored at least three points." Monterrio Evans was the scoring leader in the game with 15 points followed by John Knight with 13 points; Tyler Hayes with 10 points; and Xavier Landrum with nine. Others taking part in the scoring included: Tevin Watters with five points; Terrence Hyde and Lukador Lainer with four points each; and Alonzo Brown and Lamar Charleston with three points apiece. Evans was the leader on the boards as well with 10 followed by Hayes with nine and Brown with eight. Knight was the assist leader with six followed by Brown with five and Watters with four. Over on defense Hayes had four blocked shots while Brown and Knight had three each. Hayes led the team in steals as well with eight while the trio of Evans, Knight and Watters all had six. In a couple of games played before the Thanksgiving Break the TMS boys defeated the Sweet Water Middle School boys 49 - 22 on Tuesday, November 13 and the Leroy Middle School boys 52 - 34 on Thursday, November 15. Both games were played in Thomasville. In the game with Sweet Water Tyler Hayes led the TMS scoring with 23 points followed by James Bettis with 10 points. The trio of Terrence Hyde, John Knight, and Tevin Wattters were next with four points each while Lamar Charleston and Monterrio Evans added two points each. In the Leroy win Tyler Hayes and James Bettis were the leading scorers again picking up 19 and 10 points respectively. Monterrio Evans was next with nine points followed by Alonzo Brown and Tevin Watters with five points each and Terrence Hyde and John Knight with two points apiece.
With the season at an end Coach Russell Wright took the opportunity to thank several people, including Ben Posey for his help as a volunteer assistant and Coach Jazmin Mitchell for filling in for him during his absence on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Wright also had praise for Coach Curtis Lane and the integrity he demonstrated in the girls program. As for his team Coach Wright had this to say, "I saw a lot of maturity in the players over the course of the season and thought they showed a lot of integrity and class. I am thankful for having had the opportunity to not only teach these young men the game of basketball but more importantly what's most important in their lives."
