Oh, that smell, is from fertilizers
By Arthur McLean Editor

"It's not the sewer lagoon," said Mayor Sheldon Day when contacted about the smell at the south end of town this week.

The unusual smell has been noticeable along Hwy. 43 near the city limits for over a week now. Some residents have speculated that the smell could have been related to the city's sewer treatment lagoon located in the area, but Day said that was not the case.

"The person who is leasing the city's hay field and some other landowners tried this new fertilizer that was sulfur-based, they had no idea it would smell so," Day said.

"It's not harmful, we just haven't had enough rain to make it dissipate."

Day said at Monday night's council meeting that the local gas company had received several calls about the smell. "Folks that live around the sewer lagoon said the sewer never smelled this bad," Day said.
