It was not unusual for Joe Richard Calhoun, 52, of Whatley to head out in the woods coon hunting. Sometimes he would take one of his cousins and sometimes he'd go alone, which is what he had done on Friday, Nov. 30.

Rose Tavrin, Calhoun's sister, said, "Usually when he goes hunting, he gets back before dark. During the day sometimes he would go check on our cousin Marion but that day he went hunting about 2 in the afternoon."

"Marion came by about 8 or 9 that night and said Joe Richard hadn't come back from hunting yet. They sent some guys in the woods to look for him and they looked and yelled but didn't find him," said Latoya Washington, Calhoun's niece. "So we agreed to call the police."

Clarke County Deputy Frankie Crawford said the family contact them around 10 p.m. Deputy Crawford along with Deputy Rob Bost went to the scene. It didn't take long for the deputies to realize they were going to need help to find Calhoun in the dark woods.

It was at this time Deputy Crawford got Clarke County Dispatch to put in a call for Big Red, a 150-pound redbone hound owned by Paul Newton in Fulton.

"He (Calhoun) had been in the woods for about 9 hours when the police got the guys from Fulton to come find him," Washington said.

Big Red, his owner Paul Newton and the dog's handler Ronnie Nelson of Thomasville arrived shortly.

"I got a piece of his clothes, a T-shirt, out of his truck and let the dog smell it," said Ms. Washington.

Deputy Crawford said within 15 minutes Big Red had found Calhoun and brought him out of the woods.

"Big Red was wonderful! He went right to him," she said.

Ms. Washington said, "It had got too dark on Joe Richard and he got lost. He knew where he was but it was so dark he couldn't find the trail to get out of the woods."

"All of them was wonderful," said Ms. Washington, "the county police and the guys with the dog!"
