Never thought I'd see it
From the Editor's Desk
Arthur McLean
Just when you think you've seen and heard it all, as the saying goes.

This column was spurred by Pine Hill Mayor Harry Mason at the town's council meeting Monday night. Mason said he never thought he'd live to see great grandchildren born and the Alabama River run dry.

He got to see the great grandchildren and he's still wondering if he might not yet see the river run dry, or at least pretty darn close to it.

Later that same night, I checked on the score of the Saints Falcons game and heard the booth crew talking about Micheal Vick and how one would stay in football shape in prison. I had to check to make sure I wasn't really seeing a rerun of "The Longest Yard."

I've never bothered to count, but I probably get close to a hundred emails a day. A good number of those are spam of course. Well, I never thought I'd see something promoting the growing of marijuana as a path to riches, but there it was in my inbox the other day. They were promoting the financial possibilities of growing medicinal marijuana in California, I believe. I didn't read it very closely, as I'm not much of a farmer, and don't plan on moving to California.

And wonder of wonders, the thing I truly never thought I'd see happened recently. The University of South Alabama, my alma mater, announced that it was going to field a football team last week.

Okay, that one I'm pretty excited about.

I wonder what's next, an honest politician? "I'd love to vote for that bill, but the special interest groups opposed to it just gave me one whopper of a donation for my next campaign, so I'll have to vote no; maybe next term."

Of course, if you live long enough, you wind up seeing and hearing all kinds of things you never thought possible.

I imagine my grandparents were pretty amazed at things like the moon landing.

Which just goes to show me how far we've come.

They were amazed that a man could fly to the moon and set foot on that orbiting body.

I'm amazed that I'm hearing about how an NFLquarterback might stay in game shape while serving a prison term.

Oh well, maybe we'll make it to Mars before I die. That'll make up for it in my book.
