Give your babies to the Lord
Spiritual Reflections
Pat Ozment Jr. IMB Missionary to Ghana

It is a sad fact of life that cute little puppies become dogs and cute little babies become teenagers.

Recently, at our house, "One little, two little, three little Indians," became eight little, nine little, 10 little puppies. They were cute and cuddly, and for four weeks their mother took care of them all by herself.

Then Princess said, "Enough of this, someone else can feed these little buggers I've had it."

I became their "dry nurse," the food source for 10 bottomless pits. I couldn't imagine how much it took to feed 10 growing puppies three times a day with no "Puppy Chow" available.

The fact that there were 10 of them, and only three of them were "boy dogs" had me a little concerned.

My concern was needless. Almost as soon as word got out about them, we began to receive adoption applications. Even with my strict requirements, they were all soon spoken for.

There were three reasons that these puppies were easy to place, beside the fact that they were adorable.

First they belonged to us and that made them special to the people here.

Then their mother was a big factor. From the time she was a small puppy, Princess showed signs of being a ferocious watchdog. She is very protective of us and of our property. Her angry growl accompanied by a show of teeth, and bristling fur, stops most visitors in their tracks.

Then there is Peggy. When Princess was little she watched Peggy chase sheep, goats and cows from our compound. It looked like fun to Princess.

Now, when four legged intruders come, Peggy claps her hands, and Princess goes running, sending the unwanted livestock on their way. Her puppies watched their mother, and followed in her paw prints.

Yep, puppies and babies have much in common. Who they belong to, and how they are trained means a great deal.

Give your babies to the Lord, then "train them up in the way they should go and when they are grown they will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6.

Start them in Sunday school, and I'll see you in church.
