A Christmas stroll
And had it not been for the unseasonably warm weather, they might have succeeded. What they managed to do, however, was pull off the largest downtown stroll in memory, according to city officials. Artificial snow blowers were working, music, carriage rides, photos with Santa and a live nativity as crowds lingered on downtown streets and took advantage of the businesses offering open house activities and door prizes. "I want to give a big thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success," said Southwest Alabama Chamber director Marlo Anderson. The chamber along with the Downtown Merchant's Association and the city sponsored the event. Inside the event was a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. Fifteen crock pots of chili made by area cooks were sold off by the bowl and all fifteen were empty by the end of the night, with the proceeds going to the Salvation Army. What started as an event to lure shoppers downtown took a different turn this year with the donations, Anderson said. "We wanted this to become more of a community event," she said. Mayor Sheldon Day said the event was its largest ever in Thomasville, by his reckoning. The Mobile Press-Register featured the event on the front page, using photos from the stroll to illustrate a story about Thomasville and other small towns organizing community events for Christmas. Winners announced In addition to the excitement of the event itself, the winners of the first chamber Christmas decorating contest were announced.
Beautiworks won for business in the traditional category, while Antiques 'N Accents won in the business creative category. Freida Gibson and Hazel Duncan tied as winners in the residential traditional category and Larry and Sandra Crow won in the residential creative category.
