Southwest Alabama Medical Center has new ER procedures

In an effort to conserve emergency room resources and to provide more continuous care for non-acute medical needs, the emergency room physicians at Southwest Alabama Medical Center will use a medical screening exam to determine the status of every patient that comes to the emergency room.

The status of the patient will be determined by the ER physician to be either emergent or non-emergent. Non-emergent patients will have the opportunity to choose whether or not their care continues after reviewing financial information with a member of the registration staff.

Conditions that can be treated in a physician's officer should be treated there.

Southwest Alabama Medical Center will continue to treat all patients with life-threatening conditions without regard to insurance status. However, nonemergent services will require financial arrangements for payment at the time of service.
