Citing a belief that if you build it, they will come, economic development officials broke ground on what will become a new speculative building in Thomasville.
Earth moving to prepare the site for the building was nearly complete when the ceremony was held Thursday morning.
Anthony Onin, director of the speculative building program for Alabama Power, commended officials in Thomasville for their efforts. "I can't think of a better way to close out 2007," Onin said. "This is where it all starts, with economic development. This is jobs, this is community development. The credit goes to the mayor and leadership here for their vision and collaboration."
The speculative building is being partially funded by a grant of up to $500,000 from Alabama Power. The plans call for a 50,000 square-foot building with eave heights of 30 feet. The building will be just a shell with a dirt floor to allow the maximum amount of customization for prospective businesses.
The Thompson Caterpillar location in Thomasville was a speculative building.
"This is a great asset," said Wiley Blankenship, economic developer for the Twin Rivers Economic Development Partnership. "Everyone has dirt we can show, but few communities have buildings like this."
Officials expect the building to be complete by March of
2008.
