T'ville schools meet all goals All three of Thomasville's schools met 100 percent of the state's mandated goals to meet the state's requirement for Adequate Yearly Progress. AYP as it is known is one of the measures the state has instituted in recent years to comply with the federal No Child Left Behind Act. According to the U.S. Department of Education, "AYP is an individual state's measure of progress toward the goal of 100 percent of students achieving to state academic standards in at least reading/language arts and math. It sets the minimum level of proficiency that the state, its school districts, and schools must achieve each year on annual tests and related academic indicators." "I'm very proud of our students, teachers and administrators," said superintendent Vic Adkison. This is the third year in a row all of Thomasville's schools have reached 100 per- cent of their goals as mandated by the state. Other schools in the region did not fair as well. Sweet Water High School reached 95 percent of its goals for the year falling short of the state's declaration of Adequate Yearly Progress. But the percentage means the school only missed meeting one goal out of 21. The state set a graduation rate of 90 percent and Sweet Water hit a graduation rate of 88 percent, according to state reports. Other schools that did not meet AYP goals were: Choctaw High School, Jackson Middle School, Monroe County High School, McIntosh High School, and Millry High School. The Thomasville City School Board held a called meeting last week to take care of a frew items as follows: Approved contracts with Education Station, Little Blessings, Southwest Alabama Medical Center, Midsouth Psychiatric Therapy and Pediatric Therapy Services for support programs and services required by state and or federal mandates. Approved the resignations of Jasmin Mitchell and Suzaanne Pope, and hired David Butts - teacher/basketball coach at THS, Justin Tate - career technology teacher at THS, Geraldine Carr - cafeteria worker at THS, John David Phillips - PE teacher at TMS. and Kristi Smith - career tech business marketing teacher at THS, pending eligibility determination for an Alternate Teacher Certificate. |
