Clarke Prep wins a shootout 56-36
The Clarke Prep School Gators got a strong performance in the special teams and offense as they beat Meadowview 56-36 last Friday night at Hamilton Field.
The first quarter was like a heavy-weight fight as each team threw knock-out blows.
The Gators took the opening possession and drove 63-yards in seven plays, all on the ground, to score.
Brett Bradford covered the final 26-yards for the CPS touchdown. He also ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Gators an 8-0 lead with 9:11 left in the first.
Meadowview answered when QB Stone Jackson tossed a 4- yard TD pass to Cooper Hain. Jackson hit Daniel Blackman with the 2-point pass to tie the game at 8-8 with 4:10 left.
That is when things got exciting as Bradford hauled in the ensuing kickoff at his own 16- yard line. The senior broke through the middle of the field as he scored on an 84-yard return.
The try for two came up short but the Gators had a 14-8 lead with 3:57 left in the opening stanza.
Three plays later Meadowview was back in the endzone as Jackson dialed-in receiver J.R. Lowe on a 51-yard touchdown pitch and catch.
The attempt was no good and the game was tied again 14-14 with 2:45 to play in the first.
It must have been de'javu for the Trojans as Bradford took the ensuing kickoff back for a 90- yard touchdown.
That was the first time in school history, and possibly AISA history, that one player has taken back-to-back kickoffs for scores in the same quarter.
The attempt was no good but Clarke Prep regained the lead, 20-14, with 2:31 to go, still in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter Clarke Prep's offense got the ball back.
Still employing a punishing ground game, they pushed the ball down the field.
Quarterback Dillon Rowell called his own number on an 11-yard scamper for the score.
Randy Nichols ran in the 2- point conversion to increase the lead to 28-14 with 7:50 to play before the half.
Meadowview drove down to the CPS 19-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
A penalty and a sack moved the ball back to the Gator 4-yard line.
Facing third down and 25- yards to go, Bradford sprang free for a 96-yard touchdown run.
The attempt failed, but Clarke Prep took a 38-14 lead into halftime.
It took all of :44 seconds for Meadowview to score in the third quarter as QB Jackson hit Justin Freine with a 47-yard touchdown pass.
Jackson connected with Lowe for the 2-point conversion, cutting the lead to 34-22 with 11:16 left in the quarter.
Clarke Prep answered on the first play of the ensuing drive as fullback Mark Lear popped through the middle for a 65- yard touchdown.
Nichols ran in the 2-point conversion, making it 42-22 with 11:05 showing on the clock in the third period.
The see-saw scoring continued as the Trojans scored on the ensuing possession when Jackson threw a 4-yard TD pass to Cooper Hain. Jackson and Lowe tied up for the 2-point try, making the score 42-30.
Dillon Rowell capped the ensuing drive with a 4-yard QB sneak for the Gators.
Bradford ran in the 2-point conversion, increasing the lead to 50-30 with :22 seconds left in the third quarter.
Bradford ended the game's scoring in the final minutes with a 35-yard run on a 1-play drive.
