COMMUNITY CALENDAR Surginer VFD Surginer Volunteer Fire Depart ment will host a singing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11 with barbecue chicken plates for sale beginning at 10 a.m. The all-day fund-raiser will be held at the SVFD Fire Station in Marengo County off Highway 10, at 6279 County Road 55 in Magnolia. Barbecue chicken plates will sell for $7 each and will include 1/2 chicken, baked beans, potato salad, bread, cake and tea. Soft drinks and bottled water is available for $1 and coffee for $.50. Also included in the day's events will be a cake auction. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. For more information call 334-992-3473. Q'back club meeting The Thomasville Quarterback Club will have an organizational meeting at 7 p.m., Oct. 14, at the Thomasville High School library. All parents and supporters are encouraged to attend. Meetings will continue each Tuesday night throughout football season. Annual shrimp boil Coffeeville Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual shrimp boil Oct. 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at 1024 Highway 84 (Highway 84 and Highway 69). The cost is $10 per plate or $10 per pound cooked. Annual Butler Fest The town of Butler will host its fifth annual Butler Fest, Oct. 10-11, in downtown Butler along the Historic Courthouse Square. A few new events will be included this year will be a chili cook off and cornbread cook off held behind West Alabama Bank. Donations from these events will benefit the Choctaw County Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. The Backyard Cookoff for bragging rights will be Friday night and the Little Porkers will be Saturday afternoon. The Fifth Annual Fun Run and 5K and the bass tournament will be held Saturday. Other activities on Saturday will include an antique car, truck and motorcycle exhibit off West Academy Street. The town of Butler and WIN98 will sponsor street dances Friday and Saturday nights and the carnival will also be set up as early as Friday. MHS blood drive Marengo High School in Dixons Mills will sponsor a blood drive, through United Blood Services, from 12 noon to 4 p.m., Oct. 14. The event is sponsored by the school's honor society. Soccer registration Registration for the 2008 soccer season will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18 at Gates Drive Parke in front of the concession stand. This is a one-day registration. Parents may also register from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Oct. 17 at the recreation department located at 2285 Bashi Road. To be eligible to participate in the soccer program, one must be at least three years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2008 and no older than 16 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2008. Town hall meeting The public is invited to attend a town hall meeting from 10 a.m. to noon, Oct. 14, at the Thomasville Civic Center. Members of the Black Belt Heritage Area task force will give a presentation and hear public questions and comments on plans for establishing a national heritage area for 19 Alabama Black Belt counties including Clarke County. Retired educator meeting The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet at 11:45 a.m., Oct 16, at Gloria's Pour House in Grove Hill. Legislative - Representative is the theme of the program for this meeting. Senator Vivian Figures will be the speaker. Everyone is invited. Local officials and candidates for public office are extended a special invitation. Flu-pneumonia shot clinic A flu and pneumonia shot clinic, for ages 18 and older, will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, Oct. 16 at the Clarke County Health Department, 22600 Highway 84 in Grove Hill. Flu and pneumonia shots will be $15 each. Medicare and Medicaid will be billed for eligible patients. Patients must bring their cards for proper billing. 'Annie' comes to Thomasville Civic Center Thomasville City Schools Drama Team's performance of Annie will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Performances will be held at Thomasville Civic Center's Bedsole Auditorium. The festival will include arts and crafts exhibits, hands-on children's activities, live stage entertainment, barbecue lunch, fried fish, hotdogs, funnel cakes, biker's exhibit, door prizes, historical exhibits at the Depot Museum, antique cars. Ghost walk and festival The Thomasville Chamber of Commerce will host a ghost walk and fall festival Saturday, Nov. 1 in historic downtown Thomasville. The daylong event will begin at 9 a.m. with a motorcycle ride and will conclude with a street dance from 9 p.m. to midnight. Other activities will include 5K and 1 mile runs, ghost walk story hay ride, costume contest, ghost story writing contest, pumpkin carving contest, yard contest, carnival in Clay Park, antique cars, cake walk, dunking booth, haunted house (at the old Hille Hotel) and plenty of food. Actress Patricia Neal comes to Monroeville Academy Award-winning actress Patricia Neal and Broadway actor Joel Vig will present a dramatic reading of Truman Capote's enduring holiday classic "A Christmas Memory" at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14 at the Old Courthouse Museum in Monroeville. Tickets are $35. The event is sponsored by the Monroe County Heritage Museums' Endowment Fund. Peterman Station festival Peterman Station will hold its 25th annual arts and crafts festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. More than 100 booths will be filled with arts and crafts of all types. Entertainment is planned throughout the day. Down home foods including collards, Brunswick stew, cornbread, hamburgers, Polish sausages, hot dogs, drinks, barbecue sandwiches, homemade baked good, etc., will be served. 12x12 booths rent for $45 and $50 with electricity.
