Recently, Thomasville native Specialist Josh Nichols was quoted in a feature story produced by the Army.

Nichols, a 1999 graduate of Thomasville High School, is serving in Iraq with the 2nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army.

Nichols has been serving in the Army for more than three years, he is the son of Cheryl and the late Randy Nichols of Thomasville.

The story, produced by the 115th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment details units from the 2nd Infantry Division working with local leaders to help make their area of operations more secure.

Nichols' platoon was working in and around Mushada, Iraq.

During the morning of Oct. 1, according to the story, Nichols' platoon was taking guard duty at what is called a joint security station when the station and a nearby convoy came under attack.

Nichols' squad fought off the attack. "The difference between us and them is they can't maintain that kind of firepower for very long. We can," he said. "We fired about 1,800 rounds in a matter of just two minutes."
