Bryant retires from schools The Thomasville City School board held a moment of silence recognizing the recent death of Ann West Davis, who headed the gifted program for the school system. Davis was 62 years old. The board accepted the retirement of Jimmie Rose Bryant, assistant principal at Thomasville High School and Thomasville Elementary School. Bryant was previously the assistant principal full-time at THS until this year when staff cut-backs put her splitting time between the high school and elementary school. Bryant's resignation became effective Monday. Thomasville High School science teacher Clinton Grimes resigned his post with the resignation becoming effective Dec. 22. No replacements were announced for either vacated position at the board's December meeting. Two HIPPY parent educators, Edith Allen and Sally Anderson, resigned their posts this month. The board approved payment of 20 percent of the 2008 state at-risk money to the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Alabama and to Alpha Pregnancy Testing Center. The Boys and Girls Club will receive $11,267 and the testing center will receive $2,000. The school system's fund equity for November was approximately $640,000. That figure is down from $900,000 fund equity at the end of November of 2006, according to CFO Linda McGhee. School system expenditures were also $61,000 higher than budgeted. The increased expenditures came from purchases related to the school system's ACCESS grant for distance learning.
School superintendent Vic Adkison announced several other financial awards for the school system including: $14,170 for Alabama Advanced Placement Initiative, $10,000 from the Daniel Foundation for library circulation systems, and donations delivered by Sen. Pat Lindsey and Sen Hank Sanders totaling more than $30,000 to all three schools.
