Taking Names and Keeping Score
Reflections, thanks and comments
Charlie Anderson

As I am sitting down to write this week's column, the close of another year is at hand and the beginning of a brand new one is only a matter of hours away. It is a time when all of us can take one last moment to reflect on all those things that have happened in our lives over the past year, being careful to safely pack away those lessons we learned and those cherished memories we made so that they will be readily available to us when we need or want them in the new year.

It is also a time for putting aside and leaving behind all those things that have the potential to interfere with us making the best of the New Year that lies ahead. That includes the negative things that happened to us, which we obviously can't change and the thoughtless and hurtful transgressions perpetrated against us by others in 2007. To dwell on such things would only waste energy that we could better expend on being the best we can be in the year to come.

Last but certainly not least, it is a time when we need to remember and be thankful for family and friends who were and are such an important part of our lives. And as we do we need to take time to let them know what they mean to us and commit to being all we can be for them in the future.

It is in that vein that I would like to take a few moments to express my appreciation to all those who have made my job covering sports here at the Times such a pleasure. First, I would like to thank the ownership and management of the paper for giving me the opportunity. As I have told quite a few people, had it not been for their willingness to give me a chance and their continued encouragement over the past few years I might never have completely understood why 'Bre Rabbit' was so comfortable in the briar patch.

Secondly, it goes without saying that my job would be very difficult if it were not for all the help and support I have received and continue to receive from the great staff I have the joy of working with at the Thomasville Times. From the very first day I spent on the job through the present, they have done everything they could to make my job easier. They have offered guidance, constructive criticism, and sage advice, all of which I have needed, along with much appreciated friendship.

Of course I am very thankful for all those in the sports world who I have had the privilege to write about. That includes all those connected with the schools in our coverage area as well as those who are involved in summer programs and special sporting events. If it were not for the cooperation I have received from all of you my job would have been impossible.

I especially want to thank all the coaches and athletes who have been the primary subjects of my writing. Because of the commitment to excellence each of you has shown in every sport and all the hard work you were willing to do to achieve that level of success, my job, more times than not, has been an easy one. Writing about the successes in sports is much easier than having to deal with constant failure and we have certainly been blessed with an abundance of success in this area in the past few years.

I would be remiss if I didn't take just a moment to thank my family for all their support. In covering sports and then writ- ing the stories that tell what happened there are often constraints put on my time that might interfere with other things the family might have wanted to do. To their credit they have always been patient with me and willing to work their schedule around mine as much as possible. And even when it didn't work out they have been understanding and forgiving.

Finally, let me thank all of you readers who take time out of your busy schedule each week to read the stories I and others at the Times write. If it were not for your interest in what is going on in our community and the surrounding area all our efforts to keep you informed would be in vain. Never forget you are one of the main reasons we do what we do.

With that said, let me wish each of you a happy and prosperous New Year and challenge each of you to focus your attention on being the best you can be for yourself and others as we move into 2008.

Until next time........be safe!
