The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger basketball team got things started off right in 2008 picking up key area wins over Escambia County and Monroe County to move to 2 - 0 in the area race. The wins came on the heels of a split by the Lady Tigers in the Clarke County Invitational tournament played the week after Christmas.

In the tournament, the Lady Tigers opened up with a 48 - 43 loss to the Lady Aggies from Jackson on Thursday, December 27. It was a poor 30% shooting performance from the floor by the Lady Tigers that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

Leading the Thomasville scoring attack in the loss was Kyera Rowe with 16 points followed by Tamara Robinson with six points and the trio of Ashley Crawford, Kiera Westbrook, and Twarner Witherspoon with five points each. Rounding out the scoring was Briana Penn, Britney Stallworth, and Fran Witherspoon with two points apiece. Rowe was the leader on the boards as well pulling down nine rebounds followed by Nicole Washington and Twarner Witherspoon with five apiece. In the assist category Robinson, Washington and Westbrook all had three.

On defense Robinson and Washington led the charge with four steals each while Ashley Crawford and Rowe recorded three apiece.

The Lady Tigers faired better in their second game in the tournament defeating the Lady Hurricanes from Flomaton 44 - 27 in their game played on Friday, December 28. Although the Lady Tigers' shooting from the floor continued to be a problem in this game, the relentless Lady Tiger defense set the tone for the game.

On offense Kyera Rowe paced the Thomasville scoring attack again with 10 points. Kierra Westbrook was next with eight points while Twarner Witherspoon scored seven and the twosome of Tamara Robinson and Nicole Washington recorded five points each. Others who contributed to the Thomasville points total were: Britney Stallworth with four points, Desirea Bettis with three points and Candrea Welch and Fran Witherspoon with one point each. Twarner Witherspoon was the assist leader in the game with three followed by Rowe with two.

On defense Washington and Twarner Witherspoon led the charge with six steals each while Westbrook picked up three.

The first of the Lady Tigers' two area wins came on Friday, January 4, when they defeated the Lady Blue Devils from Escambia County High School 65 - 42 in a game played before the home crowd in Thomasville. After taking a 22 - 15 lead into the locker room at the end of the first half, the Lady Tigers outscored their guests 23 - 12 in the third quarter to take control of the game. "This was by far our best overall team effort of the season thus far," Lady Tiger Coach Curtis Lane said. "We did a great job on defense and really shared the basketball."

Three Lady Tigers scored in double figures in the game to set the pace with Twarner Witherspoon knocking down 11 points while Tamara Robinson and Nicole Washington poured in 10 points each. Ashley Crawford and Kierra Westbrook were next with seven points each followed by Kyera Rowe and Fran Witherspoon with six points apiece. Four others including Brianna Penn, Britney Stallworth, Naporsha Watters, and Candrea Welch all added two points each to the Thomasville total. The rebounds in the game were pretty evenly distributed with Rowe, Washington, Westbrook and Fran Witherspoon pulling down four each. Washington was the assist leader in the game with eight followed by Twarner Witherspoon with four.

On defense Twarner Witherspoon led the charge with seven steals followed by Robinson and Washington with six apiece.

The Lady Tigers made it a three game winning streak when they dominated the Lady Tigers of Monroe County High School 54 - 20 in a game played in Thomasville on Monday, January 7. Once again it was the third quarter when the Lady Tigers took complete control of the game scoring 20 unanswered points to move in front 43 - 11. "This was another important win for us," Coach Curtis Lane said. "I am particularly proud of our defensive effort in the second half."

Kyera Rowe had the hot hand for Thomasville in the game leading the way with 13 points. Nicole Washington was next with 10 points followed by Ashley Crawford with eight points, Shelby Crawford with seven points, and Twarner Witherspoon with six. Others contributing to the point total were: Britney Stallworth with four points; and Candrea Welch, Kierra Westbrook, and Fran Witherspoon with two points each. Twarner Witherspoon was the leader on the boards pulling down 10 rebounds followed by Rowe with seven and Fran Witherspoon with six. In the assist category Ashley Crawford, Welch and Twarner Witherspoon all had two.

Over on defense Twarner Witherspoon led the charge with six steals followed by Washington with five.

With their season record now at 5 - 3 and their area mark at 2 - 0 the Lady Tigers were next scheduled to host the Lady Bulldogs from Sweet Water High School on Tuesday, January 8, before hitting the road on Friday, January 11, for another key area game against the Jackson High School Lady Aggies.
