Relay captains' kick-off meeting

During the 2007 Thomasville American Cancer Society Relay for Life, volunteers raised more than $109,000. Former Relay for Life team captains and anyone interested in starting a 2008 Relay for Life team are urged to meet at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at Gaston's Grill (formerly Ryan's Family Steak house) on Highway 43 in Thomasville to begin planning Thomasville's 2008 Relay.

VFW meeting

VFW Post 5106 in Thomasville will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28. All members are urged to come to this important meeting.

Financial aid workshop

Thomasville High School seniors and parents are urged to attend a financial aid workshop at 9:45 a.m., Jan. 29, in the school cafeteria. For more information call Sandra Williams at 334-636- 4451.

Fort Sinquefield play topic of meeting

The Clarke County Historical Society will meet at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Grove Hill Town Hall. Speaker will be Dr. Jim Herod of Grove Hill. Dr. Herod and the Grove Hill Writers Club are writing a play about Fort Sinquefield. The fort, located west of Whatley, was the site of an attack during the Creek Indian War in 1813. The public is invited to the meeting.

Cattlemen's meeting

The Clarke County Cattlemen's Association will hold its annual steak dinner at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at Clarke Preparatory School in Grove Hill. Guest speaker will be Leroy native Dr. Billy Powell, executive vice president of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association.

Grieving parents

He Cares Christian Counseling Center, next door to Cooper Lewis CME Church in Chatom, will host a meeting at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29 for parents who are struggling with the death of a child. For more information call Clara Johnson at 251-847-2012 or Hazel J. Kirksey at 251-769-0513.

Benefit barbecue

A benefit is planned for Wayne Etheridge, Ricky Parden and Aidan Donnallan on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Shiloh Baptist Church on Shiloh Church Road in Dixons Mills. Barbecue chicken and pork plates, as well as barbecue pork by the pound, will be sold. Takeout plates will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guests may eat in from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a singing featuring Glory Road and The Gandys beginning at 6 p.m. Plates and barbecue by the pound will be available for $7. Poll worker reception

The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will host a poll worker appreciation reception at 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, at H.W. Pearce Jr. Memorial Park Assembly House in downtown Jackson. All current and long-serving poll workers are encouraged to attend. Co-sponsors for the event are welcome, including individuals, public officials, political organizations, businesses, social/civic clubs, professionals organizations, educational institutions, churches, sororities / fraternities and special interest groups. Mardi Gras Ball

The Toddtown Community Development Center is sponsoring a Mardi Gras Ball at 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25 at the H.W. Pearce Jr. Memorial Park Assembly House in Jackson. Steven and Schequetta Johnson Knight will be crowned the Mardi Gras King and Queen at 8:45 p.m.. Tickets are on sale for $15.
