Pine Hill seeking $375,000 for sewer field expansion
By Arthur McLean Editor

Pine Hill will be seeking a $375,000 grant for expanding its sewer treatment spray field.

"ADEM is demanding that we increase our spray field," said Mayor Harry Mason. The state environmental agency has told the town to increase the spray field to improve treatment.

The spray field is part of the process of returning treated waste water. The waste water is treated to levels just below the standard for stream discharge and is sprayed onto a field for absorption.

The grant request will be presented to the Delta Regional Authority and the grant application will be filed with the help of the Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission, Mason said.

Veterans center given support

After holding off for a month to gather more information, the town council voted to send a letter of support for a proposed disabled veterans rehabilitation center in Pine Hill. The plan pitched by Gayle and Charles Marshall would include the purchase of the Pine Forest Motor Lodge in town and convert it to a center where disabled veterans can receive services such as job training and physical therapy.

The Marshalls plan to pursue a federal grant to make the center a reality. They asked the council for a letter supporting the center, the first step in the process of applying for the grant.

The Marshalls made their pitch to the council during the December meeting, but the council held off to research the matter further. Council member Robert Jordan said there was a similar facility in Tuskegee, but she was unable to get much information about it. In the course of her research, she said she was told most of these kinds of facilities were located in larger metro areas.

New roof

The council received bids for replacing the flat roof on city hall with a new metal roof. The low bid of $147,900 from Johns & Kirksey of Tuscaloosa won the bid. Construction time line for completion of the new roof was listed at 150 days.

In other business, Jordan reported that a new sign for the town's industrial park has been ordered and that the town's beautification committee has come up with a plan to put a small park in town on railroad property if approved. The council agreed to let the committee investigate the park idea and see if it could be done.
