Schools screen for scoliosis On Feb. 5, 6 and 7, Thomasville City School nurses will screen all children enrolled in grades five through nine to check for scoliosis, a side-toside curve in the spine. The purpose of this screening is to recognize, at the earliest stages, any deviation from normal, so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis screening is required annually by law for school children in the state of Alabama in grades five to nine (ages 11 - 14). The procedure is a very simple one. The trained screener observes the child's posture while standing and bending forward. If scoliosis is suspected, the parent or guardian will be notified to have further evaluation from the child's own physician. Any child currently receiving medical care for scoliosis from a physician is asked to provide a physician's statement regarding the treatment in order to be exempted from the screening.
Contact the child's school for more information.
