Sense of community binds us together
On this page this week, we have a letter from Harry Hodges offering his thanks to those who came out to help him and his neighbors after high winds ripped through the neighborhoods in the south end of town.

It's a spirit that comes with small town life. People know each other and they help each other out. Life hasn't always been easy in rural Alabama, and that sense of community is one of the ways folks make it through. People turn out to help each other, often without even being called.

There's a certain sense of self-reliance thats bred in these parts, a boot-strap mentality that says not to wait for someone else to step in and start making things happen.

It's something we hope Thomasville doesn't lose as it grows.

There are many boards working many hours staffed by volunteers working with the goal of making Thomasville better. There's our volunteer fire department. Volunteers work long hours to help the Chamber of Commerce or help at the hospital, nursing home or library.

There's no way we could pay them all to do what they do. It comes from a drive within, a commitment to making our community better.
