Lady Tigers split with CCHS, move to playoffs

The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger basketball team began and ended the final week of the regular season with games against the Lady Bulldogs of Clarke County High School. On the schedule in between were games with the Lady Panthers from Marengo High School and the Lady Bulldogs from Sweet Water High School.

As fate would have it the Lady Tigers split with their County rivals from Grove Hill defeating the Lady Bulldogs on the road 56 - 50 on Monday, January 28, and losing to them at home 56 - 50 on Friday, February 1. In between they defeated the Lady Panthers from South Marengo County 56 - 42 in a game played in Thomasville on Tuesday, January 29, and saw their game with Sweet Water be cancelled due to the severe weather that came through the area on Thursday, January 31.

In the Lady Tigers' victory over Clarke County on Monday Twarner Witherspoon and Shelby Crawford scored 19 and 10 points respectively to lead the Thomasville scoring attack. Britney Stallworth was next with nine points followed by Nicole Washington and Kierra Westbrook with six points each. Rounding out the scoring were Ashley Crawford with three points, Candrea Welch with two points and Fran Witherspoon with one point. On the boards Washington and Twarner Witherspoon led the way with four rebounds each followed by Shelby Crawford with three. Washington set the pace in the assist category with six. Over on defense Washington was the leader as well with three steals while Westbrook had two.

On Tuesday the Lady Tigers placed three players in double figures with Kyera Rowe recording 13 points, Twarner Witherspoon 12 points, and Ashley Crawford 11 points. Nicole Washington was next with eight points followed by Kierra Westbrook with six points and the duo of Tamara Robinson and Britney Stallworth with three points each. On the boards Twarner Witherspoon pulled down eight rebounds to lead the way while Stallworth grabbed six. In the assist category Robinson and Washington shared the lead with three apiece. On defense it was Ashley Crawford leading the charge with four steals followed by Washington with three.

In Friday's home loss Kyera Rowe led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 15 points followed by Kierra Westbrook with eight points and Ashley Crawford with seven points. Nicole Washington and Twarner Witherspoon were next with six points each while Britney Stallworth had four points, Desirea Bettis had three points and Tamara Robinson had one point. Twarner Witherspoon led the way on the boards with eight rebounds followed by Rowe with seven. Twarner Witherspoon was the assist leader with three followed by Washington with two. On defense Rowe led the charge with three steals.

With the regular season now over the Lady Tigers, who were 12 - 6 on the year, enter post season play this Thursday, February 7, when they host the 4A Area 1 tournament. They will square off against the Lady Tigers from Monroe County in the second game of the night at 7:00 PM. Immediately preceding their game the Lady Blue Devils from Escambia County will play the Lady Aggies from Jackson at 5:30 PM. The winners from the two Thursday contests will then meet on Saturday, February 9 at 7:00 PM for the championship. Both teams who advance to Saturday's championship game will qualify for the next round of the playoffs with the ultimate winner hosting round two and the runner-up having to travel.
