Henson wins $5,000 H. Alger scholarship

Jennifer Henson
Jennifer Henson, a senior at Thomasville High School, recently received a great honor. Jennifer was selected as one of only 12 high school students in Alabama to be a 2008 Horatio Alger Association Alabama Scholar.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. bears the name of the renowned author Horatio Alger Jr., whose tales of overcoming adversity through unyielding perseverance and basic moral principles captivated the public in the late 19th century. The association, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit educational organization, was established in 1947 to dispel the mounting belief among the nation's youth that the American Dream was no longer attainable.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles. Through its scholarship programs, the association encourages students to pursue their own version of the American Dream. While providing scholarship opportunities, association members mentor the scholars and underscore the importance of service to others. The members work directly to provide promising young people with the support, education and confidence needed to realize their aspirations.

The Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished Americans is a prominent scholarship provider in the US. Some of the many requirements for the scholarship include critical financial need, involvement in co-curricular and community activities, demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, and a minimum grade point average. Miss Henson has shown that she demonstrates all of these things and is a worthy candidate for this scholarship.

Jennifer shows great leadership ability and growth potential at Thomasville High School. She is president of the National Honor Society, Leo Club, and captain of the Senior Relay for Life team. Miss Henson also enjoys spending time volunteering with the public library and is currently organizing a "Gently Used Shoe Drive." Jennifer will graduate in the top two of her senior class and with many hours of college credit behind her. She will be attending Auburn University in the fall majoring in chemical engineering.
