School News
The main reason? Well, it was evident by the morning announcements on Tuesday morning that THS is full of team spirit. After the usual attention beep, Mr. Ferguson's jubilant announcement of "How 'bout those Tigers!" was accompanied by a background chorus of "Tiger's Fight" by the cheerleaders. What was the occasion? Our Tiger basketball team, of course! Congratulations to the boys on their Area Cham - pionship win over Jackson on Monday night! The boys pulled out an exciting 69-65 win to continue on to the subregion game on Friday night. The game will be played here against Andalusia on Friday night. Although the girls could not pull out a win against Jackson (40-35), they will continue on to the sub-region game against T.R. Miller at 6 p.m. on Thursday the 14th. If our guys and girls win in their games this week, they will continue on to the region game in Troy. However, if they are defeated, their season will be over. That, my fellow Thomas villians, gives us all a reason to come out and support these Tigers and push them to victory with outstanding school spirit! Our teams do not want to stop here; they need out support. In other sports news, the baseball team will begin its season in Mobile at the Hank Aaron Classic on Monday, Feb. 18. This is a big tournament for our guys and they also need all of our support. They will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23. Also, any girls interested in trying out for cheerleader need to sign up outside of Mrs. Newton's door as soon as possible. Mrs. Ingram is very excited about the upcoming year. Mascot tryouts will be held parallel with the cheerleader tryouts. We have been announcing it for weeks now, and the time has come. The THS Beauty Review "Reel Mania" will be put on this weekend. The talent portion will be featured on Friday night. Tickets are still available for this show. As always, the seats for the Saturday night show are all sold out! This promises to be a great show; our students have, and are still, working very hard. Good luck to all of the students involved! The "Show Your Talent" auditions will be held on Feb. 19 from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria. Students, to sign up for auditions, please see Bernard Jackson, Alex Taylor, Danye Lewis or Ka'tia Cowan during your breaks and lunches. Students of the Month for January were announced this week. Congratulations are in order for the following students: seniors Bethany Rush and Joey Kidd, juniors Max Cartwright and Sally Sperling, sophmores Alex Taylor and Andrew Ault, and freshmen Zachary Smoker and Adley Joyce. Thank you to these students for displaying your Tiger Pride. Seniors, the days are getting even busier. The applications for the Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital scholarship are due March 1. Anyone interested in a career in healthcare should see Mrs.Williams to get the ball rolling on this opportunity. For those of you interested in a career as a teacher, you should also see Mrs. Williams for more great scholarship opportunities. Moreover, as we are all aware, the local scholarship deadlines are coming quick. Let's make sure that we are conscious of these and make the best of the opportunities we have been given. Seniors are also encouraged to attend the ASSET testing at Alabama Southern on Wednesday, Feb. 20. This is a college readiness test and will provide important feedback on the classes you should take as a freshman. The Senior Relay for Life team has kicked off a great fundraising program this past week. Team members have passed out the "Pocket Change" jar and have raised more than $40 in two days. That is a lot of pocket change! Students will be at the basketball game on Friday night asking for donations to further their cause. Additionally, the students are selling moons and suns for $1 to commemorate the lives that have been affected by cancer. See any senior team member to purchase a moon and/or sun that will be placed on the wall in the cafeteria. Many other fund-raising efforts will be taking place in the next 10 weeks, so please make every effort to support the students in their $5,000 goal to help fight this horrible illness.
As you can see, THS is booming with activity. Until next time, I am busy, busy, busy Jennifer Henson. Happy Valentine's Day! Have a great week!
