THS girls move on to sub-region

The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger basketball team had their hopes of winning a 4A Area 1 Tournament Championship come to an end this past Saturday, February 9, when the Jackson High School Lady Aggies came from behind late in the fourth quarter to defeat them 40 - 35. In the game which was played in Thomasville, the Lady Tigers trailed for most of the game but rallied to take a three point lead midway the final period before losing it again to their guest from the South end of Clarke County.

Setting the scoring pace for Thomasville in the losing effort was Kierra Westbrook with eight points and Nicole Washington with seven. Britney Stallworth and Twarner Witherspoon were next with five points each followed by Shelby Crawford and Tamara Robinson with four points apiece and Kyera Rowe with two. Rowe was the leader on the boards with seven rebounds followed by Crawford with six and Witherspoon with four. Stallworth was the assist leader for Thomasville with three and Witherspoon led the charge on defense with two steals.

To qualify for the finals the Thomasville Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Tigers from Monroe County High School 35 - 22 in the opening round of the tournament held in Thomasville on Thursday, February 7. Unlike the finals, the Ladies from Thomasville took a 12 - 9 lead after the first quarter and never trailed in the game.

Leading the offensive attack in the game for the Thomasville Ladies was Kyera Rowe with a double/double that included 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kierra Westbrook was next in the scoring category with nine points followed by Britney Stallworth with seven points and Shelby Crawford with four. Twarner Witherspoon and Tamara Robinson rounded out the scoring with two points and one point respectively.

Following Rowe on the boards was Nicole Washington with eight rebounds, Crawford with seven, and Stallworth with six. Stallworth was the assist leader in the game with four followed by Robinson and Washington with two apiece. Over on defense Rowe and Washington led the charge with four steals each.

Despite the loss, the Lady Tigers will still advance to the Sub-Regional round of the AHSAA State Playoffs this Thursday, February 14, as the Area 1 runner-up. Being in that position they will have to travel to Brewton to take on the Lady Tigers of T. R. Miller High School who claimed the Area 2 Championship when they defeated the Hillcrest High School Lady Jaguars last Saturday. Tip off for the game is set for 6:00 PM.
