Taking Names and Keeping Score
It's an exciting problem
Charlie Anderson
With official signing day for high school football players a week in the past now and the high school basketball state playoffs getting into full gear, there is no doubt that the start of the high school baseball season can't be far behind. That is an especially comforting thought for those of us who love the Great American Pastime and love high school sports in general.

As fans of high school sports we have all gotten so accustomed to one sport season running into another that any kind of lull between them would be something we might not be able to tolerate well. As it is now there is practically never any down time between high school sports and if the schools' teams are successful enough to make it into the State Playoffs there is always an overlap. The only break comes in the summer time when schools are out. But even then, as soon as vacations are over the anticipation and speculation about the up coming football season captures the attention of the avid high school sports fans.

Although having high school sport seasons that overlap works out well for all the avid sports fans, it sometimes becomes a challenge for the coaches of each sport. First of all most all coaches in high schools across Alabama are involved in coaching in more than one sport. And that is particularly true in all the classifications below the 6A level. If they are the head coach in one sport often times they are an assistant in another. That in itself is a problem for the coach, in that he or she can't fully devote themselves to the sport they hold the principle responsibility for until the season where they are obligated as an assistant ends. Of course like all of us fans they too want any team they are affiliated with in the school to be ultimately successful to the point they win a state championship. Secondly, there is the fact that a number of your best athletes play more than one sport and as seasons overlap they more than likely will not be available to participate in both during the overlap period. There are possibly some exceptions to that situation when their dual participation involves competition in one of the major team sports and competition as an individual in a sport like track, tennis or golf. But even then their focus will be divided and may make them less effective in both situations.

Never the less, if you are a coach at or the fan of a high school that enjoys success in all of its sports programs, having seasons that overlap is really exciting and a good problem to have. Fortunately in this area we have been blessed with a number of our schools continually having their sports seasons overlap which makes us all happy.

Lest we forget, it certainly isn't that way in every high school and/or every area of the state. Therefore we don't need to take things for granted here. Instead we need to be thankful that we have athletes in our school who are not only capable of playing like champions but who are willing to pay the price in hard work it takes to become one. On top of that we need to be extremely appreciative and supportive of the highly skilled coaches at our schools who give of their time to instruct, guide and mentor these athletes in such a way that they can reach their potential as individuals and collectively as a team.

Let's also remember that any inconvenience we may experience due to the overlapping of these sports can be blamed on success and if we do then the inconvenience won't matter very much anymore.

Until next time……be safe!
