The Sweet Water Bulldogs had three of their outstanding senior football players to sign letters of intent to continue their education and play football at the collegiate level this past Wednesday, February 6. For all three of them it marked the end of brilliant high school careers in which they led their Bulldogs to State Football Championships in 2004, 2006, and 2007.Included in the trio were Nakia Dennis, Anthony Landrum, and Drew Luker.

Dennis, whose senior season was interrupted by a six game absence this past season due to an injury, signed with the University of West Alabama Tigers where he is expected to see action on the defensive line. Despite the injury he was a force to be reckoned with on the Bulldog defensive front when he was healthy and managed to record 43 tackles and four sacks during the 2007 season.

Landrum, who has the distinction of being named the MVP in all three of the Bulldogs' State Championship games during his career, cast his lot with the Tuskeegee University Golden Tigers where he is projected as a running back. In his senior season as a Bulldog he compiled 2,491 all purpose yards including rushing for 2,103 yards and scoring 39 touchdowns on 261 carries; picking up 118 yards on 10 receptions in the passing game; and returning 10 kickoffs for 270 yards and one touchdown.

Luker, who played extensively on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs as both a quarterback on offense and an outside linebacker/ strong safety on defense, chose the UAB Blazers as the next destination in his football career. At UAB initial projections have him slated for duty on the defensive side of the ball at either an outside linebacker position or a strong safety slot. Because of his versatility however there is also a possibility he could get a look at a receiver position on offense. In his final season as the trigger man in the Bulldog offense he rushed for 462 yards and six touchdowns and threw for 1,092 yards and 12 touchdowns. Over on defense he was credited with 92 tackles, six interceptions, seven pass break ups and one fumble recovery.

All three of them earned numerous post season honors this year including being named first team All - State selections by the ASWA and first team Small School All - Region team members by the Mobile Press- Register. Landrum was also included on the ASWA Super 12 list and selected as the class 1A Back of the Year.
