Relay for Life gaining steam When people gather at an American Cancer Society Relay For Life®, they come to share hope, celebrate those who are surviving cancer, remember those who have been lost, and fight back against the disease. Those aspects of the event led to the choosing of this year's theme: Celebrate - Remember - Fight Back (with the emphasis on "Fight Back!"). This year's chairman is Karen Bradford. Team captains have already been meeting, but anyone interested in starting a team is urged to contact Brandy Webb for more information at (cell) 456-9602. The next team captains' meeting will be on March 6th, 6 p.m. at Alabama Southern Community College's campus on Highway 43 south. The setting will be the teleconference room in the library building to the right of the administration building. At this meeting, teams will register online with help from Online Chair LeAnn Moore. Commitment fees will also be collected from the existing teams at this time. The Relay for Life will be held in Thomasville at Gates Drive Park on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26. The event kicks off with a survivor's reception, and cancer survivors are cheered on as they take the first lap around the track after the opening ceremonies. Closing ceremonies are at 6 a.m. the following morning, when the total funds raised by all teams is announced. Future announcements and articles will give names and contact information for those interested in participating in the entertainment and activities of the night. Also forthcoming will be information on how to purchase a luminaria in honor or in memory of a loved one. Tea light candles are placed in bags lining the walking track to form glowing reminders of the reasons to relay.
Keep reading The Thomasville Times for more information on Relay events, meetings, fundraisers, and goals.
