Spiritual Reflections
Confused? For peace turn to God
Pat Ozment Jr. IMB Missionary to Ghana
Princess, our dog, had 10 puppies last fall. We decided never again, so we made arrangements to have her spayed by the local vet. We had tried before, but she was too young. We figured better late than never. The vet had an office/operating room, and a shed where examinations and pre-op were performed. After examining Princess the vet gave her a shot to put her to sleep (not the permanent kind), and then he took care of other patients. He returned to find that Princess had a high tolerance to the anesthetic, so he gave her another shot. Later he had to shoot her again.

Finally she started acting drunk, so he asked Lansah and me to help get her ready. We washed off a wooden table with a garden hose and held her while he prepped her with a double edge razorblade that he held in his bare hand. By now Princess was out of it, and we carried her to a table in his office, which was illuminated by a single light bulb suspended from the ceiling.

We assisted further, by holding her steady while he made a rather long incision using a scalpel, instead of the razorblade. We were instructed to "turn her a little" on her side so her internal stuff would spill out on the table, and he removed what is necessary to have puppies.

This made a lasting impression on me, and it led to some confusion in Lansah.

Several weeks later the confusion surfaced when Lansah was driving Peggy and me home from Accra. We were stopped for speeding. The police asked Lansah why he was in such a hurry, and he told them that he had to get these "doctors" to the Regional Hospital in Tamale.

One of the officers smiled, and said how thankful he was that doctors would come to Ghana to help.

Then he asked me, "What kind of doctor are you?" without thinking I said, "Theological." He said, "Wonderful we need theological doctors. Have a safe journey."

Anyone can get confused, but 1 Corinthians 14:33 says, "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…" If you get confused, and you want peace, turn to God, and I'll see you in church.
