New library pitched to T'ville city council
The board made a presentation to the Thomasville City Council Monday night where it presented architect's renderings of a new building that could be built next to the civic center. The drawing, along with proposed floor plans show the building to be nearly triple the size of the current library, one that is rapidly being outgrown, said members. "The children are learning basic skills (at the library)," said board member Marc Prescott. The teen reading program has grown to the point where it had to split into two groups and the summer children's reading program has already outgrown the current library, Prescott said. Adult readers are also pressing the library, and seniors are taking up the Internet access and learning to use it at a high rate, Hodges added. "A lot of thought and time has gone into considering the appropriate size and design of the new library," said board member Scott Lewis. "We believe we have a design that will be of value to the people of Thomasville." Head librarian Gina Wilson said the design is intended to create a safe environment for patrons of all ages to study and learn. The estimated price tag for the building is $2.9 and it was designed by the architectural firm Donofro and Associates. However, all of the recent civic construction projects, designed by a number of different architectural firms have had construction bids come in significantly over their estimated budget.
Day thanked the board for their vision and said the library was one of the projects pitched to representatives during his most recent visit to Washington, D.C. The library board has also established a foundation with the intent of raising money and winning grants to help pay for a new library. No timetable has been given for the project yet.
