Donation funds Ancestry.com at library

Thanks to a donation by long-time Thomasville resident B.A. Cogle Jr., beginning on March 3, questions such as whether a grandmother's family came from Virginia or possibly Perry County, Ala., can be answered.

Because of his personal interest in genealogy, Cogle has financed Ancestry.com Library Edition, a web-based reference technology to make tracing family trees easier. How about that great-great-great uncle who fought in the Civil War? Because of Cogle's generosity, these records can be found online at the library. Perhaps someone knows kin who came to this country from Ireland, Africa: look at ships' lists and ships' photos, as well as immigration and census data. Using the Library's computers, in early March you can search birth, marriage, death, and property records, as well as thousands of newspaper articles and books.

The Thomasville Public Library is responding to a growing interest in family history that's captured not only the Clarke County community but America as a whole.

"More and more of our patrons want to explore their past and these resources make it easy and convenient" said patron Steve Wilkerson.

Ancestry Library Edition is available on the library's Internet stations located within the Thomasville Public Library. However, Gina Wilson, director, said to get the most out of the experience, patrons should come prepared with a list of ancestors to research.

"Make a list of the names of every direct ancestor you can think of," she advised.

Genealogy is a wonderful hobby for anyone who wants to know more about where they came from.

Jim Smith, the library's consultant from the Alabama Public Library Service, stated, "Genealogy research is a valid informational need that the public has."

Library board members Hildra Clarke, Rita Nichols, Scott Lewis, Marc Prescott and Harry Hodges and Thomasville City Council Member Alberta Dixon are happy this service will be offered at the library.

The library, located at 1401 Mosley Drive adjacent to Highway 43, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call 334-636-5343.
