The Thomasville High School boys' varsity basketball team saw their 2007 - 2008 season come to an end this past Thursday, February 21, when they fell to the Central- Coosa Jaguars 60 - 45 in the first round of the South Regional Tournament being held on the campus of Troy State University. With the loss the Tigers ended their year at 16 - 7 but set some new standards along the way. "Despite the disappointment we feel right now, this team has a lot to be proud of," Coach Jazmine Mitchell said. "This team made history by becoming the first team in 15 years to reach the finals. We feel like Thomasville basketball is on the rise and these guys have kick-started what we hope will be a bright future for our program. I am so proud of all of them."
In the game, which was close throughout the first two quarters, it was the inability of the Tiger guards to penetrate the very tenacious 1-2-2 zone defense of the Cougars and a lack of rebounding on both offense and defense in the second half that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. The Tigers who only shot 36% from the field including a dismal 28% from beyond the arch were turned away time after time on the offensive boards while the Cougars who shot 46% picked up a lot of their points on put backs following offensive rebounds.
Leading the way on offense for the Tigers in the losing effort was Tacory Marshall with 10 points. Dairl Jackson was next with eight points followed by Alex Buford and Tysean Thompson with six points each. Others contributing to the Thomasville point total were; Antron Holt and James White with four points each; Delvonte Harris with three points; and Shaq Jackson and Katrell Watters with two apiece.
