The Thomasville High School varsity baseball team evened their early season mark at 2 - 2 this past Monday, February 25, when they defeated the Washington County Bulldogs 13 - 2 in the first game of what was supposed to be a varsity doubleheader between the two clubs. It was the home opener for the Tigers, who have seen all four of their games thus far this season be decided by 10 runs or more. "It's like we are on a roller coaster," Tiger Coach Clint Anderson said. "One minute we are up and the next the bottom falls out. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we are really basically young and inexperienced in a lot of places. Like I've told the players, at this point it's like working on a puzzle, we've got to find the right pieces and put them in place."

In the win over the visiting Bulldogs, Paul Noble picked up his second win of the season on the mound allowing two runs on two hits, three walks and one hit batsman while striking out three in five innings. Only one of his two runs was earned.

Over on offense the Tigers pounded out 14 hits on their way to collecting their 13 runs. Alex Buford led the charge with three hits followed by Reeves Bozeman, Jon Harrison, Paul Noble, Tevin Pope and Mallan Sheffield with two hits each and Kenny Sanders with one. Bozeman and Sanders were the leaders in the extrabase hit category with a homerun a piece with Buford adding a triple. Sanders led the team in RBIs with four while Buford recorded three, Bozeman two and Harrison, Jamie Morgan, and Daniel Rogers all picked up one.

The second half of the twin bill had to be cancelled due to a malfunction with the infield lights which could not be repaired in time to continue play. It's not certain at this point if the game will be made up.

Prior to the match-up with the Bulldogs, the Tigers played their final two games in the 2008 Hank Aaron Classic this past week, defeating the 6A Murphy Panthers 11- 1 on Tuesday, February 19, and then falling to the 6A Robertsdale Bears 18 - 5 on Saturday, February, 23. The split left the Tigers with a 1 - 2 record in the Classic having lost their first game in the tournament to 6A Satsuma on Monday, February 18.

In the win over Murphy it was Paul Noble claiming the victory on the mound allowing the Panthers one run on three hits and four walks while striking out seven in six innings of work. It was Noble's first win of the season.

At the plate the Tigers collected eight hits and were led by Reeves Bozeman and Paul Noble with two hits each. Others joining them with one hit apiece included Jon Harrison, Jamie Morgan, Tevin Pope and Mallan Sheffield. Bozeman and Noble were the extra-base hit leaders as well with each of them slamming a double and a triple. Noble was the RBI leader in the game with four followed by Bozeman with two.

In the Tigers' loss to Robertsdale it was a combination of some good hitting by the Bears and a porous Tiger defense that had five costly errors. Reeves Bozeman who started the game on the mound for Thomasville was saddled with the loss allowing 11 runs, including six that were earned, on eleven hits and one hit batsman in 2 1/3 innings of work. Mallan Sheffield followed Bozeman to the mound and allowed six unearned runs on one walk and two hit batsmen in 1 1/3 innings of work. Sean Skelton finished the game giving up one run on two hits and one walk in 2/3 inning. All three of the Tiger pitchers recorded one strike out during their stint on the mound.

On offense the Tigers collected seven hits led by Jon Harrison's two hit performance. Others contributing one hit each to the cause were; Alex Buford, Jamie Morgan, Tevin Pope, Daniel Rogers, and Mallan Sheffield. There were no extra-base hits recorded by the Tigers in the game. Harrison was the RBI leader for Thomasville in the game with three followed by Travis Kelley and Rogers with one each.

Up next for the varsity Tigers will be another trip to the Mobile area on Friday, February 29 and Saturday, March 1, to participate in the Johnny Poole Classic hosted by Satsuma High School. In the tournament the Tigers are scheduled to play Satsuma again as well as Auburn High School. The times for the games were set for 7:00 PM on Friday and 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM on Saturday.
