UDC has special guests
The chapter heard a review of the book "Devotion" presented by Sulynn Creswell, manager of Blackbelt Treasures. The main character in the novel is Jefferson Davis' daughter, Winnie, who died at age 34. Mrs. Creswell was introduced by Gladys Mason, program chairman. Hostesses were Rosemary Nettles, Elizabeth Pope and Voncile Long. The group later listed to David Steele, an attorney and owner in a wood business, as he reviewed the book "I'll Take My Stand" by John Crow Ransom. This took, published in 1930 and reprinted in 1962, is a compilation of 12 different Southerners. Steele was introduced by Gladys Mason. Hostesses for this meeting were Mrs. Peyton Burford, Mrs. James E. Brock and Mary Harvey. When Mrs. James (Martha) Lampkin and Mrs. Harold Grimes hosted the chapter at the home of Mrs. Lampkin, Don Donald presented the program. Mr. Donald was accompanied by Mrs. Donald. Mr. Donald presented a slide show of Gen. John Herbert Kelly, who was born in 1839 and died Sept. 4, 1864. Gen. Kelly can be called "one of our own" for he is the ancestor of many Wilcox County residents. The by-laws committee (Mary Ann Ezell, Marsha Dunn Boutwell and Robbie Cook Purser) met in January for the purpose of composing by-laws for Charter Chapter No. 36. These will be presented to the chapter at a later date. The next meeting of the chapter will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, in the conference room of the Camden Fire Station.
