Lady Tigers win opening tournament

The Thomasville High School Lady Tiger softball team opened their 2008 season on a high note picking up three wins to claim the crown in their own Thomasville Lady Tiger Classic held on Saturday, February 23.

In their first game of the day they defeated the Sweet Water Lady Bulldogs 15 - 4 to get off on the right foot. Lindsey Overstreet and Savannah Smith combined on the mound to hold the girls from Marengo County to only five hits. Overstreet who started gave up four runs on three hits in the first inning before giving way to Smith. From that point own Smith blanked the Lady the Lady Bulldogs allowing two hits and one walk while striking out four in five innings to claim the victory.

At the plate the Lady Tigers racked up 11 hits led Ashley Crawford, Taylor Gilchrist, Shelby Myers, Lindsey Overstreet, and Savannah Smith with two hits each. Rachel Norris also contributed one hit to the total. In the extrabase hit category Crawford and Smith both had a homerun and a double in the game while Norris and Overstreet slammed a double apiece. Overstreet was the RBI leader in the game with four followed by Crawford with three, Adreanne Boyette with two and Gilchrist and Smith with one apiece.

In their second game of the day the Lady Tigers dispatched the Jackson High School Lady Aggies 11 - 4. Once again it was Savannah Smith picking up the win on the mound for Thomasville, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.

Just as it had been in their first game of the day the Lady Tiger bats were sizzling as they pounded out 12 hits. Savannah Smith set the pace with three hits followed by Ashley Crawford, Shelby Myers, and Lindsey Overstreet with two hits each and Cassie Flint, Brianna Penn, and Rachel Wright with one hit apiece. In the extra-base hit area Myers led the way with a double and a triple while Penn and Smith each had a double. Crawford had the RBI lead with two followed by Myers, Penn and Wright with one each.

With the two early wins the Lady Tigers moved on to the championship game of the tournament where they found themselves matched up with the Lady Aggies from Jackson again. This time the Lady Tigers defeated their neighbors from the South end of the county 15 - 1.

Savannah Smith continued to weave her magic on the mound for the Lady Tigers holding the Lady Aggies to one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three in seven innings of work to pick up her third win of the tournament and the season.

On offense the Lady Tigers continued to pound the ball picking up 11 hits this time. Lindsey Overstreet was the leader with three hits followed by Ashley Crawford and Savannah Smith with two hits each and Adreanne Boyette, Shelby Myers, Rachel Norris and Brianna Penn with one hit apiece. Smith was the leader in the extra-base hit category with a double and a triple while Overstreet and Penn both legged out a triple and Boyette and Norris slapped a double. Smith was also the RBI leader in the game with three followed by Boyette, Crawford, Norris, Overstreet, and Penn with one each.
