Wilcox Treasure Forest earns gold

Wilcox County Chapter of Alabama Treasure Forest members receive Gold Award during state conference
For the third consecutive year the Wilcox County Chapter of Alabama Treasure Forest was the recipient of the Gold Award when the state conference of Alabama Treasure Forest met at the Renaissance Riverview Hotel in Mobile.

Criteria "points" for the award include the chapter showing an increase in new, as well as renewed memberships, an emphasis on forestry education (an forestry related activities) in programs and tours scheduled by the chapter, planning and posting to a yearly calendar chapter meetings and activities, involving resource professionals in chapter programs, conducting "Classroom in the Forest - Forest in the Classroom" programs in the schools of the county and at least two members completing requirements for certification as a "Treasure Forest."

The outdoor session of the two-day state conference was held in Chunchula at James and Joan Malone's "Heritage Homestead." This session consisted of a wide variety of outdoor forestry activities and exhibits for young and old alike.

Representing the Wilcox County Chapter of Alabama Treasure Forest at the two-day conference were John Ollison, Alonzo and Robbie Purser, Jake Harper, Bill and Pat Irby and Wendy Padgett.

Paul Wingard, director of the Wilcox County Forestry Office is advisor for the Wilcox County Chapter of the ATFA. Roy Jodan of Demopolis, president of the Alabama Treasure Forestry Association, presided at the state conference. Robbie Purser is president of the Wilcox County Chapter of the ATFA while James Malone is executive director of the state ATFA office.
