Thomasville Middle School team improves record to 8-4
By Charlie Anderson Contributing Writer

The Thomasville Middle School Tiger baseball team improved their season record to 8 - 4 this past week when they dropped a doubleheader to Demopolis on the road and then swept a doubleheader with both Wilson Hall Middle School and Martin Middle School at home.

In the twin bill at the Demopolis Sportsplex on Monday, March 10, the host DMS Tigers defeated TMS 4 - 1 in the first game and 5 - 0 in the second. In both games it was a case of too little offense by TMS and some critical mistakes on defense that spelled their doom. Logan Bishop, who started game one on the mound for TMS, was charged with the loss allowing four runs on five hits, one walk and one hit batsman while striking out two in four innings of work. At the plate the TMS offense was limited to only two hits with Logan Bishop and John Knight recording one apiece. Knight had the only extra-base hit slugging a double.

In the night cap the TMS hitters matched their hosts with three hits apiece but failed to produce any timely hits. Ryan Cribb, Caleb DeRouen, and Cory Orr all had one hit each for TMS but the Demopolis pitchers were able to scatter them. On the mound Steffan Chapman, who started for TMS, was saddled with the loss allowing five runs on three hits and six walks while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings. Ryan Cribb pitched the final 2/3 inning striking out one.

Things improved for TMS on Wednesday, March 12, when the Wilson Hall Bulldogs came calling. The Tigers took care of their visitors from the County Seat defeating them 6 - 1 in game one and 17 - 4 in the second one. Hunter Jackson picked up the win in the opener allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out six in five innings. At the plate the TMS offense pounded out nine hits led by Tevin Watters with two. Joining him with one hit apiece were; Ryan Chaney, Ryan Cribb, Caleb DeRouen, Hunter Jackson, John Knight, Justin Parten, and Cody Shoemaker. DeRouen and Shoemaker had the only extrabase hits with both of them connecting on a double. DeRouen was the RBI leader with three followed by Cribb, Parten, and Shoemaker with one each.

Tevin Watters grabbed the win on the mound in game two allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five in four innings. Tyler Dement came on for the final inning giving up one walk. On offense TMS recorded 11 hits led by John Knight with three and Drew Downey and Adam Sparks with two apiece. Others joining the Tiger hit parade were; Tyler Dement, Hunter Jackson, Cody Shoemaker and Tevin Watters with one hit each. In the extrabase hit category Knight had a triple and an inside the park homerun while Jackson, Sparks and Watters all had a double. Knight was the RBI leader as well with four followed by Logan Bishop, Dement, Corey Orr, Shoemaker, Sparks and Watters with one apiece.

The positive results continued on Friday, March 14, when TMS swept the Martin Middle School Bulldogs 10 - 3 and 12 - 4. The two wins over the squad from Selma made it a clean sweep with the Tigers having taken two from them earlier in Selma. In the first game of the pair, Tyler Dement claimed the win on the mound holding the visiting Bulldogs scoreless and limiting them to only one hit while striking out two in three innings of work. Logan Bishop finished the game giving up three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two in the final two innings. Over on offense the TMS attack produced six hits with Lamarr Charleston, Tyler Dement, Caleb DeRouen, Hunter Jackson, John Knight, and Tevin Watters all picking up one. In the extra-base hit category Dement and Knight both had a double. Charleston and DeRouen led the team in RBIs with two each with Dement and Knight plating one apiece.

In the final game of the afternoon Ryan Cribb drew the start on the mound for TMS and picked up the win allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five in 3 1/3 innings. Steffan Chapman closed things out for TMS giving up one hit and striking out three in 1 2/3 innings. The offense once again recorded six hits with Cody Shoemaker leading the charge with three while Logan Bishop, Ryan Cribb and John Knight all got one each. In the extra base hit category Bishop and Shoemaker each had a double while Knight legged out a triple. Bishop and Shoemaker were the RBI leaders with three apiece followed by Cribb and Corey Orr with one each.

Up next the TMS Tigers were scheduled to travel the Leroy on Monday, March 17, for a game with the Leroy Middle School Bears. Their game was the first game of a Middle School - Junior Varsity doubleheader. Following that, they are scheduled to close out the season with the annual TMS Invitational Tournament set for Saturday, March 22. Pairings for the tournament include: 9:00 AM - Demopolis vs Leroy on Tucker Field and Sweet Water vs Wilson Hall on Thomasville High School Field; 11:00 AM - Leroy vs Sweet Water on Tucker Field and Demopolis vs Thomasville on Thomasville High School Field; 1:00 PM Thomasville vs Wilson Hall on Thomasville High School Field; and 3:00 PM the Championship game on Thomasville High School Field.
