News shows need to diversify economy
OUR VIEW
There's been big news in the timber products industry around these parts lately with the sale of Weyerhaeuser's containerboard mills and the potential sale of Linden Lumber.

It's become a viciously competitive business, and one that gets harder and harder for the small companies to keep up. Even large companies like Weyerhaeuser, International Paper and Louisiana-Pacific aren't immune to changes in the economy and in the various markets they serve.

Timber and timber related industries have served this region well for many years, from family owned operations to large corporations, the timber industry has provided a living for thousands and thousands of our residents.

But if the recent news shows us one thing, it's that our economic development efforts must help us diversify our industrial base and try to find some way to help create a professional class in rural Alabama.

That's a very tall order to fill, but if southwest Alabama continues to place all of its eggs in the timber basket, we may eventually come to regret it. Times change, technologies change how we live and work and changes we can't foresee could continue to put strain on the companies that produce products from our trees.

We know our economic developers are well aware of this as well, and as they say, easier said than done, but we hope southwest Alabama can find the way.
