Relay activities abound
By Dana Dunn Special to the Times

"Womanless" beauty reviews, windshield washing at a bank's drive-through window, and dog photos?

Pizza kits, pizza sales at Pizza Hut, and cutlery?

Yards around town being "flowered and flocked?"

What does all this strange activity mean?

Well, here in Thomasville, it means that the Relay for Life is fast approaching.

The Relay for Life of Thomasville is our community's part in raising funds to fight cancer. Such events are held all across the nation to bring awareness to the fight against cancer, to honor cancer survivors, and to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

On Friday night, April 25, the event kicks off with a survivor's reception. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is organizing the reception, so if you know of someone who should be recognized, please contact the RSVP with their name and contact information.

After the survivors take the first walk around the walking track at Gates Drive Park, teams of walkers will walk for one hour per person throughout the night. When the final ceremonies are held the following morning, the total amount raised in our city will be announced.

How is the money raised? With events like those listed above, through pledges and donations, with luminaria sales, and through the generosity of local companies, sponsors, and individual givers.

There will be all sorts of events going on throughout the night. A schedule of activities will be listed at a later date.

Another way to tell that Relay is on its way is the abundance of purple that will soon be cropping up around town. Purple ribbons are being sold in memory of Ann West Davis, a teacher and community leader and activist. The purple ribbon sales have begun. The big bows cost $25.00 and will be delivered the first week of April. They can be purchased from any team member or by calling Karen Bradford, this year's Relay coordinator, at 334-830- 0362.

Thomasville has been hosting a Relay fundraiser for 13 years now, and our city is among the top cities in the nation in per capita fundraising, a testimony not only to the compassion of our residents but also to the impact that this terrible disease has had on so many lives. Last year almost $110,000 was raised.

Relay activities will include candlelight ceremony at 9 p.m. Luminarias will line the perimeter of the park's walking track to memorialize and to honor those who have fought the battle with cancer. Area residents are invited to dedicate luminarias to loved ones and friends who have had this disease. The suggested donation is $5 per luminaria. With your donation, the individual's name you designate will be written on a luminaria bag; the candle will be lit in the Friday evening ceremony. The lights at the park will be extinguished for this portion of the evening, and the glow of the candles will light up the entire park. It's a moving reminder to all who attend of the people they know and love who have had cancer.

To place a luminaria, fill out a form at the Ala-Tom RD&D Office on West Front Street in Downtown Thomasville. Or, see the person manning the special table set up that Friday evening at the Relay for Life.

For more information, call Karen Bradford at 334-830- 0362.
