New CDS director at AAMU seeks to build on success

Carolyn A. Lewis
HUNTSVILLE - "Students need direction and marketability now more than ever," said the new director of Alabama A&M University's (AAMU) Career Development Services (CDS).

Carolyn A. Lewis, a native of Thomasville, earned a bachelor of science degree in business in 1980 and she earned an MBA in 1985, both from AAMU. Lewis, who began her career with AAMU in 1978 as a financial aid data analyst, now heads a five-person staff that includes a co-op coordinator, career counselor, recruitment specialist, career information/ teacher education specialist and senior secretary.

"We will continue the recruitment process to ensure that more companies are seeking our students," said Lewis. Last year alone, more than 300 companies sought AAMU graduates. In fact, so many companies expressed interest in recruiting AAMU students at the fall career fair that CDS officials had to turn some away owing to a lack of space.

"Because of the uncertainty of today's economy, it's very important that students be more competitive and better market themselves," Lewis said. And, although AAMU attracts several companies searching for engineering and business students, Lewis added, CDS is looking for those companies with a wide range of needs that will translate into opportunities for all of our majors.

Before becoming director of CDS, where she has worked since July 1992, Lewis worked in the office of numerous positions of increasing responsibility. Overall, her duties entailed promoting career preparation through workshops, business etiquette training and counseling and professional development. She also has assisted students with resume preparation, interviews, and the securing of both co-op and full-time jobs.

Prior to her CDS affiliation, Lewis' extensive career background includes service as an inventory management specialist for the U.S. Army Aviation Command, Redstone Arsenal. She is an active member of Draper Memorial Church of God in Christ where she is involved with the religious denomination at the local, district, state and national levels, achieving the distinctions of "Evangelist" and "Mother."

Lewis said the biggest challenge in the past has been trying to get all AAMU students to take advantage of the office's services. She noted the university has now made CDS registration mandatory for all students who complete 31 hours of study and CDS will rely on assistance from the faculty and staff to help ensure that all students visit CDS.

"CDS has steadily improved over the years," Lewis said. "We understand that the students, community, employers, faculty and staff are our customers. Thus, we want to improve, build on our successes and to show steady progress each year."

Ms. Lewis is the daughter of Frank and Pearl Lewis of Thomasville.
