Tigers sweep Monroe County 3-0

The Thomasville Tiger varsity baseball team got off to a good start in their area play this past week with a three game sweep of the Monroe County Tigers. The three game set took place over a two day period with Thomasville hosting the first game on Thursday, March 20, and then traveling to Monroeville for the final two games on Friday, March 21.

In the first game, which Thomasville won 6 - 5, Daniel Rogers was credited with the win on the mound bringing his season mark to 2 - 3. In five innings of work he allowed four runs on five hits, two walks and three hit batsmen while striking out three. Mallan Sheffield followed Rogers for one inning allowing one run on one walk. After Sheffield, Paul Noble closed out the game giving up one walk and striking out two in his one inning to record a save. At the plate Alex Buford and Jamie Morgan led a nine hit attack with two hits each. Joining them with one hit were; Reeves Bozeman, Dylan Digman, Jon Harrison, Paul Noble and Tevin Pope. In the extra-base hit category Morgan had a pair of doubles while Digman hit his first homerun of the season and Bozeman and Buford added a double apiece. Digman was the RBI leader with two followed by Bozeman, Morgan, Pope, and Sanders with one apiece.

The first game of Friday's doubleheader was a see-saw battle with the lead changing hands three times before Thomasville finally put it away 11 - 7. Paul Noble, who started the game on the mound, picked up the win bringing his season record to 4 - 1. In 5 2/3 innings he allowed seven runs on four hits, four walks, and one hit batsman while striking out six. Rob Anderson, who followed Noble to the mound, closed out the game holding the Monroe County offense in check for the final 1 1/3 innings. On offense Thomasville had fourteen hits led by Reeves Bozeman, Dylan Digman, Jon Harrison, Jamie Morgan, and Paul Noble with two hits each. Rounding out the attack with one hit each were; Alex Buford, Tevin Pope, Kenny Sanders, and Mallan Sheffield. In the extra-base hit area Sanders blasted his third homerun of the season while Bozeman, Digman, and Morgan all had a double. Leading the RBI chase was Bozeman and Sanders with two each followed by Buford and Pope with one apiece.

In the final game of the series Thomasville brought out the broom defeating their host 9 - 4. Jamie Morgan, who started the game on the mound, picked up the win allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three in three innings of work. Reeves Bozeman followed Morgan giving up one hit while striking out four in two innings. Over on offense, Shaq Jackson set the pace for Thomasville picking up three hits. Jamie Morgan was next with two followed by Rob Anderson, Walt Bedsole, and Corey Browder with one hit each. In the extrabase hit category Jackson legged out a triple while Bedsole, Browder and Morgan all slugged a double. Browder was the RBI leader with two while Bedsole, Jackson, Morgan, and Russ Wright added one apiece.

Coming up this week the Tigers were scheduled to travel to Chatom on Monday, March 24, to take on the Washington County Bulldogs. After that they will open the Pizza Pro Classic here in Thomasville with a game against the Sweet Water Bulldogs on Thursday, March, at 6:00 PM. They will continue play in the tournament on Friday when they take on the St. Jude Pirates at 5:45 PM and the Greenville Tigers at 8:00 PM. Their final game in the annual classic will take place at 6:45 PM on Saturday when they play the UMS Bulldogs. A complete schedule of Pizza Pro Classic games can be found on Page 2B.
