Vote on gas tax bill was wrong
OUR VIEW
There's a bill pending that could require judges must have at least five years and in some cases, 10 years of experience practicing law before they can be judges. Maybe we also need an intelligence test for our state lawmakers before they can be allowed to vote on legislation.

Last week, state lawmakers, in their infinite wisdom, rejected changes that would enhance the state's severance tax on the natural gas that is drilled from the sea floor in Alabama's waters.

A recent judge's ruling and gaping loopholes in the current law could leave Alabama holding the bag while big energy companies are profiting off our state's natural resources.

An alternative bill is being drafted, and hopefully, it will be one that better benefits the citizens of this state and actually find favor with our hard-working representatives in Montgomery.
