Council approves emergency repairs
By Arthur McLean Editor

The Thomasville City Council approved an emergency bid for the replacement of the Boys and Girls Club roof. Damage to the roof from recent storms has led to numerous leaks in the building. Contractors who put in bids for renovating the entire building were asked to break out the roof portion of their bids for the emergency roof replacement. Contract Maintenance's bid of $109,781 was approved unanimously.

The council approved the first members to sit on the city's new zoning board of adjustments. The new body will hear requests for zoning changes and requests to allow "non-conforming" uses of land under the city's new zoning law. The board will then make recommendations to the council for final approval. Members appointed to the board are: Horace Curry, Jack Brewer, Bill Hill, Catherine Downey and Velma Rowden. City attorney Edmon McKinley will serve as the board's legal representative.

Day reported to the council that steel has been ordered for expansion and renovation work on fire station No. 2 and that construction should begin within the next couple of weeks. Work on the speculative building has been put on hold due to weather issues, and the city has received a tree grant of $15,000 from the Ala-Tom RC&D for tree planting. Day said the trees are here and ready to be planted.

In other business, Day said Thomasville has been approached by another town he declined to name at the moment to help with a project that could land a heavy manufacturing facility. The city also agreed to apply for a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for sewer improvement work.

Malts and Martinis LLC at the location of the Delmar Restaurant received approval from the Alcohol License Review Committee. The council will vote on approving an alcohol sales license for the business at its next meeting.
