Don't hold your breath
If you're thinking you'll be able to get face to face with presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, shake his hand and look him in the eye, you probably shouldn't hold your breath.

As of press time, the itinerary for McCain's visit wasn't quite nailed down, so right now, we don't know where he's going or how long he'll stay in town. While he's expected to give a talk on citizenship to the students at Thomasville High School and have a small round table discussion at Alabama Southern Community College, that's all subject to change given the winds and whims of highpowered political campaigns.

As reported here, the speech to the students will be closed to the public for security reasons.

Bitter much?

So Barack Obama said last week that small-town folks are bitter about their state in the economy and that makes them do things like go to church, hunt, and be racist. Huh? I hate to break it to him, but there's plenty of racists in big metropolitan cities too.

As for the rest of it, I don't see how being bitter about one's economic situation makes someone hunt or go to church on a regular basis. If anything, I'd say if you're really that bitter, you're probably not in the mood to go to church that often.

Are folks in small towns bitter? Sometimes, sure, we all can be. Life's not exactly a bed of rose petals and money still doesn't grow on trees.

But it doesn't help when a presidential candidate makes a statement that makes it seem like all he or she sees when considering rural America is a bunch of white folks busy cleaning their guns and white robes.

Patents

Sometimes you can read the darndest things. I read just the other day that there's a burgeoning movement to stop software programs from being awarded patent protection. On the one hand, that strikes me as crazy. On the other it makes perfect sense. I'm guessing they'd still fall under copyright protection though, and that lasts longer than a patent anyway.

Flying

I'm sure hoping Delta and Northwestern get their merger settled before I fly out for the honeymoon next month. The last thing I need is to wind up in one place with our bags going somewhere else. If it does happen, hopefully I'll at least get a postcard.
