Ask yourself the question 'WWJD'
Anumber of years ago I read the classic Christian novel "In His Steps" by Charles M. Sheldon. Though the book was first published in 1896, it was as timely, relevant, challenging and thought provoking when I read it, as it was when it was written.

Many of you have probably never heard of it, so you would be surprised to know that it is one of the most widely read Christian books of all time, having sold over 30 million copies in at least 15 languages.

Last week I was sorting through books, sent from the states for our seminary library, when I found a copy of the rewrite of that book, authored by the great-grandson of Charles M. Sheldon, Dr. Garrett W. Sheldon. Both books tell the story of what can happen when a group of people commit themselves to making every decision in light of the question, "What would Jesus do?"

That probably sounds more familiar than "In His Steps." Maybe you have a bracelet somewhere with lettered beads that spell "W.W.J.D." Those bracelets and the bumper stickers that were so popular a few years ago all came from the "Sheldon" books.

These books are not for everyone. If you are not serious about your relationship to God the Father, through Jesus Christ His only, one of a kind, Son, the books are not for you. If you are serious about it, get a copy of one of the books. For a contemporary treatment of the idea, get the re-write. For a historical treatment, get the original. Get a copy and read it.

When Jesus called His disciples, He said, "Follow me." In Mark 8:34 Jesus said, "…If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."

In John 12:26, Jesus says, "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am my servant will also be…"

"Following Jesus," means thinking, living and acting like Jesus, every day, living by the answer to the question, "What would Jesus do?"

Ask yourself the question, answer it, apply it, and I'll see you in church.
