COMMUNITY CALENDAR Old eyeglasses collection The Thomasville Lions Club will be collecting any new or used complete pair of prescription eyeglasses from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturday, April 26 at various stores around Thomasville. The Lions Club members will also be collecting funds and giving out information on Camp Seale Harris, a camp supported by the Lions Clubs of Alabama, which is for children with diabetes. Health fair Free screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight, exercise, body fat profiles and medication assistance will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 26 at New Hope No. 1 Baptist Church at Choctaw Corner Road in Thomasville and sponsored by Rural Alabama Health Resource Center. Anyone interested in having a booth, call Kathy at 205-376-6400. Honoring volunteers Thomasville Nursing Home will be honoring its volunteers with a reception at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 27. Everyone who has volunteered at the nursing home is invited to the reception to allow residents and staff to show their appreciation for the time and energy given to make the lives of the residents the best they can be. VFW meeting VFW Post 5106 and its ladies auxiliary will hold their regular monthly meetings at 7 p.m., Monday, April 28. All members are urged to come out to this very important meeting. Jewelry sale A $5 jewelry sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, April 28 and 29, at the Southwest Alabama Medical Center large dining room at the nursing home. Cash checks and credit cards will be accepted. Proceeds will benefit the Southwest Alabama Medical Center. Art exhibits The Thomasville Elementary School and the Thomasville High School will hold their students' art exhibits Thursday, May 1. The high school exhibit will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the T.M.S. gymnasium. The elementary school exhibit will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the elementary school. Fish fry South Marengo Fire and Rescue Squad will hold its semiannual fish fry on Saturday, May 3 at the squad hall, Coxheath Highway 10, Mile Marker 36. Plates will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $7 and will include fish, hush puppies, baked beans, coleslaw and cake. A bake sale will also be held during the same time. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House, 500 Vanity Park Drive in downtown Jackson. Social hour will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. Congressman Artur Davis will serve as toastmaster. Softball tourney A May Day softball tournament for men and women will be held May 3 and 4 at McFadden Park in Thomasville. Opine-Tallahatta VFD fund-raiser The second annual Opine- Tallahatta Springs Volunteer Fire Department's fund-raiser will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 17 at the fire station. Participants are asked to bring lawn chairs and join in a funfilled evening at the fire station located on Tallahatta Springs Road (County 44). Food, drinks, cake walk, white elephant sale, giant slide for the children and door prizes can be enjoyed. Gospel singing will be by the Dixie Disciples, Glory Road, Sound of Joy, Mallory Broadus and other local talent. PHVFD fund-raiser Pine Hill Volunteer Fire Department is planning to give away a cypress wood nine-hole martin birdhouse handmade by Adam Hepstall and his dad on July 3. The birdhouse can be seen at area businesses throughout Pine Hill. For information on how to win the birdhouse, contact any Pine Hill Volunteer Fireman or go by the Pine Hill City Hall. ANON Meets AL-ANON meets every Thursday night at 6:30 at Pineview Baptist Church (enter door at Moore Street entrance behind church). SVFD hosts singing, barbecue Surginer Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fund raising event Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the SVFD Fire Station, 6279 County Road 55, off Highway 10 in Magnolia. Singing will fill the day with music by Glory Road, Final Answer, Gene Etheredge and Friends, Mallory Broadus, D.J. Dunn, Rosa Grayson, Bob Chaney, Brandy Beach, Jimmy D. Mosley and others. Enjoy plenty of barbecue pork. Purchase by the plate or by the pound, each for $7. Plates will include, meat, baked beans, potato salad, bread and cake.
