Thomasville's annual Relay for Life event culminates Friday night at Gates Drive Park. Relay member teams will be showing off their decorated tents and games for the teams will run throughout the night during the 12-hour event.

The Relay for Life is a fundraising event that helps provide financing for cancer research and helps cancer patients with care expenses.

A cancer survivor's reception will begin at 5 p.m. with official opening ceremonies set to begin at 6 p.m.

As is customary, cancer survivors will walk the first lap and then be joined by their families for the second lap.

The teams will start walking at 6:30 p.m.

This year, the event was named locally in honor of Ann West Davis, who died late last year after years of battling cancer.

There will be a grill master competition, an auction, team cheer competition and a special luminary service sponsored by Family Security Credit Union.

Teams have been raising money for several weeks through a variety innovative programs. Donation totals will be announced after the final event Friday.

There is still time to sponsor a luminaria for the event. A form is available on Page 2 of this week's issue.

Thomasville has a recent history of beating the fundraising goals set for it by the American Cancer Society.
