Dedication, signing at museum

The public is invited to attend the dedication of the Josiah and Lucy Martin Mathews Cabin at the Clarke County Museum complex on Sunday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

The keynote speaker, Dr. David Mathews, a Clarke County native now head of the Kettering Foundation in Dayton, Ohio, will give a history of the cabin, and the arduous restoration process will be described by Clarke County Historical Society members.

Re-enactors portraying original owners Josiah and Lucy Martin Mathews will be on hand to greet guests. In addition, copies of the newly reprinted "Sketches of Southwest Alabama" by the late D.C. Mathews will be available for sale.

The cabin was built in the 1830s and occupied by pioneer settlers Josiah and Lucy Mathews.

In the event of rain, the dedication will take place at Grove Hill Town Hall.

Former Clarke Countian to sign books Saturday

A book signing will take place Saturday, April 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Clarke County Museum. Grove Hill native Ted Dunagan will sign copies of his recently reprinted book, "A Yellow Watermelon." Set in Clarke County, Dunagan's book, although fiction, is largely autobiographical.

"A Yellow Watermelon" tells the story of 12-year-old Ted Dillon who befriends a black sawmill worker and another boy his own age. Set in the 1940s, Ted finds himself kneedeep in a Clarke County secret involving his new friends and the richest, meanest man in town.
