McCain supporters comment on visit
Some of those on hand said you would have thought Senator John McCain was a rock star the way the children at the elementary school screamed and waved when he arrived. His visit to rural Alabama brought people from across the state and as far away as Orlando, Fla. to Thomasville to hear what the presidential candidate had to say. Here are a few comments made as people waited in line outside of Alabama Southern Community College, hoping to be one of those able to get in to see and hear Sen. McCain. Melissa McDuffie, a Thomasville native who now lives in Auburn said, "I applaud him for considering the small town, the backbone of America. Their votes count too." Jimmy Pugh of Coffeeville commented Monday, "I got to see President Bush in Orlando and hopefully get to see the next president, to meet him and possibly shake his hand." Pugh brought with him, his father-inlaw Cliff Griffis from Orlando.
Mary Elizabeth Mason Dunn and her husband B.R. Dunn came to Thomasville from Linden. Mr. Dunn who spent 41 years, 7 months in the military said, "I think it's great that Sen. McCain has come to Thomasville." Mrs. Dunn said, "I think it's great that he cares enough about the little towns to come here. The sacrifice he made for us when he was captured as a soldier, his work in the senate. He'll look out for the middle class and other people. He'll work with the terrorist conflict. He knows our needs." Tommy Gaillard who lives in Jackson is a teacher at Alabama Southern Community College and is also a pastor at four United Methodist Churches in the area. Mr. Gaillard said, "I've come to see above and beyond everything else, to see the man - the man who was a prisoner of war. The character of the man regardless of the outcome of the election who is the best qualified. I consider it a privilege and an honor to see him and hopefully will get to meet him."
J.D. Clanton of Coffeeville came to Thomasville along with his father, Darwin Clark of Leroy. The younger Clanton said, " I just wanted to see Senator McCain. I wanted to see what he has to say." The senior Clanton said, "I feel sorry for the Democrats. They don't have nothing to vote for." James Andrus of Thomasville commented, "I think I'm supporting the right man. He'll do a mighty good job for us." Alfa Farmers Federation representative, Robert Utsey from Montgomery was hoping to get an opportunity to ask Sen. McCain a question regarding the farmers in Alabama. Utsey commented, "We at Alfa support and represent farmers and I'd like to ask him what he plans to do to help the farmers. What he plans to do to support the $5 billion industry."
"I love McCain," was the comment Jackson Elementary School third graders Kierstyn Steed and Lizzie Dumas made.
Another group traveled more than a hundred miles on Monday from Jay, Fla. to see Sen. McCain. The group came representing American Legion Post 121, and included the post president, vice-president and president of the women's auxiliary.
