The Thomasville High School Tigers, who qualified for the first round of the AHSAA state playoffs as the runner-up in 4A Area 1, found themselves on the road this past weekend for a match-up with W. S. Neal Blue Eagles, champions of 4A Area 2. Under the new format which involves the best two out of three series for all rounds of the playoffs the two teams were scheduled for a doubleheader on Friday, April 18 and a third game if necessary on Saturday, April 19.

As it turned out the two teams did indeed split in Friday's double dip with the Tigers taking the first one 15 - 4 and then dropping the second one to the homestanding Eagles 6 - 1. That forced the third and deciding game on Saturday which the Tigers won 11 - 2 to advance to second round action.

In their first game on Friday Paul Noble took the mound for the Tigers and turned in a yeoman like performance to pick up the win. In seven innings of work he allowed four runs on three hits, five walks, and two hit batsmen while striking out five. With the win his season mark improved to 5 - 3. At the plate the Tigers pounded out 14 hits led by three hit performances from Reeves Bozeman and Paul Noble and two hit outings by Jamie Morgan and Mallan Sheffield. Adding one hit each to the hit parade were; Alex Buford, Dylan Digmon, Tevin Pope and Kenny Sanders. In the extra-base hit category Noble blasted his fifth homerun of the season and connected on a double to lead the Tigers while Sheffield got his first homerun. Pope added a triple to the mix and Morgan slugged a double. Noble also led the RBI chase with four followed by Sanders with three, Bozeman and Sheffield with two each and Pope with one.

In turning the tables on the Tigers in game two the Eagles rode an 11 hit performance to victory to even up the series at one game apiece. Rob Anderson, who started for the Tigers, was charged with the loss allowing two runs on seven hits, and one walk while striking out four in three innings. He was followed by Mallan Sheffield who allowed four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three in two innings. Daniel Rogers kept the Eagles on the roost over the last two innings giving up one hit and hitting one batter while striking out three. On offense the Tiger bats, that had been so hot in the first game, fell silent with Jamie Morgan, Paul Noble and Kenny Sanders being the only Tigers with a hit.

Now with the series knotted up at 1 - 1, Saturday's game became crucial. Taking nothing for granted the Tigers went to work on offense picking up eight hits that they parlayed into their 11 runs. Leading the charge with two hits each were Dylan Digmon and Tevin Pope followed by Jamie Morgan, Paul Noble, Kenny Sanders, and Mallan Sheffield with one hit apiece. In the extra-base hit category Pope connected on a double and his first homerun of his high school career while

Digmon blasted his second homerun of the year. Digmon and Pope led the team in RBIs as well with three apiece while Sanders drove in one run. On the mound Alex Buford picked up his second win of the season working five innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits, one walk and one hit batsman while striking out five. Daniel Rogers came in after Buford for one inning giving up one hit before Reeves Bozeman closed the game striking out two in the final inning.

Moving on to the second round the Tigers are scheduled to play host to the Alabama Christian Academy Eagles this weekend with the two teams slated to tie up in a doubleheader on Friday, April 25 beginning at 4:00 PM and then play a third game on Saturday, April 16 if necessary. The Eagles who entered the playoffs as the 4A Area 5 runnerups, qualified for the second round by taking two out of three from 4A Area 6 champion Dadeville last weekend.
